Parents Views of Violent Video Games
Throughout the years, video games have found a way to get increasingly more violent each year as time has gone on. These video games have been appealing for the younger generation. They enjoy the content of violent video games as they feel it is a form of entertainment and enjoyment to kids and teenagers around the world. But how do parents feel about violent video games? How do they view it? Do they agree with what is being put out there?
According to a PBS article "Do You Know What Video Games Your Children Are Playing?", shows that parents simply do not know that there is violence connected to video games. A recent study that was conducted by the American Academy of Pediatrics claims that more than 90 percent of parents do not monitor ratings on video games played by their kids. As a matter of fact, there are lots of parents that do not know that video games ratings exist. Even more concerning is the fact that there are parents who are unaware that violent video games have a connection to violence in real life. It can affect the development and emotions that their children have in various ways. They can grow up to be dangerous people, and the lack of parenting can be the cause of that. If parents do not pay attention carefully on how affecting violent video games can be, they can be one of the culprits for letting their child play violent video games. Luckily for parents, there are steps that can be taken to prevent their children from becoming violent people like the violence portrayed in video games they play. They are easy steps that can be followed to prevent damage to their children.
To prevent kids from becoming violent, Lisa Pawlak, writer for the San Diego Family, explains parents can help step in and use the American Academy of Pediatrics media guideline to set and enforce clear age appropriate limits. They can make sure that kids are allowed to play video games, but to a certain extent. She writes that if they spend too much time on video games, then that is where the behavioral problems really start. Too much time behind the sticks can affect the mind of a young child, which could lead them to acting out. They should also really focus on other activities that matter to them like school work, outdoor activities, playing a sport, participating in another activity, and engaging with friends and family. Lastly, they should monitor children when they are playing their games to make sure they play safely. They can prevent their child from interacting with strangers they do not know, who could be dangerous. They can also look out for anything in video games that may seem inappropriate for them. It can be discussed that playing a game as such is not for them, and encourages them to play games that are more friendly and less hostile.
Playing video games is fun, especially for children. Parents want nothing but the best for their child, but parents are sometimes blind when they monitor their children when it comes to playing violent video games. Too much violence can lead to many problems for their kids. Finding a solution is not that hard, and can be easily done. Without parental guidance, children can end up becoming dangerous figures of society.
